The presence of excess synthetic compounds in the soil can radically alter its chemistry, leaving it in poor condition for planting. Moreover, watering the plants can wash away these chemicals and leach into waterways. In contrast, organic fertilizer poses no such danger.

Aside from its benefit to the environment, organic fertilizer is also economical. They are less expensive than commercially manufactured synthetic fertilizers. This is a practical consideration, especially if you are in a farm where raw materials are readily available. But wherever you are, making organic fertilizer is easy – as long you have patience and a place to create a compost pit. Simply dig up a six to eight-inch deep hole in your backyard and toss into it any organic household wastes like vegetable cuttings, leftovers and other things that can rot and feed the micro-organisms. After some time, you can scoop the compost byproduct and use it in the garden soil.
